So you've seen Buckingham Palace, you've done the Sydney Opera House and you've climbed the Eiffel Tower? If you're sick of the same old sightseeing breaks, then perhaps it's time to check out some of the more peculiar attractions. From haunted houses to amazing architecture, there are some weird and wonderful places to see around the world. Let's take a look at five of the world's most unusual houses, all worth visiting for a holiday with a difference.
50 Berkeley Square, London - Located in one of the most sought after and expensive residential areas in central London, Berkeley Square boasts some very desirable Georgian homes. However, 50 Berkeley Square is one house you wouldn't want to live in.
In the nineteenth century, it was labelled Britain's most haunted house, on account of the terrible things that happened there. Visitors during this period reported seeing a gory spectre lurking in the house. It is said that at least two men who dared to sleep in the haunted bedroom died as a result.
Much mystery and folklore surrounds this mansion in London's West End. One thing is certain: a visit to 50 Berkeley Square promises to be a seriously unsettling experience.
The Boot House, Mumbai, India - The state capital of Maharashtra, Mumbai boasts some incredible tourist attractions and is the perfect place to go for some authentic Indian culture. However, Mumbai also has some surprising hidden gems.
The famous Kamala Nehru Park is one of Mumbai's most popular tourist attractions. This beautiful park is home to The Boot House, a two-storey house in the shape of a giant boot. There is a staircase running up the middle, leading to a balcony with an impressive view of Kamala Nehru Park.
The Boot House is thought to have been inspired by the tale of the old woman who lived in a shoe. Open to visitors, this fairy-tale house is an enchanting sight which is guaranteed to captivate children and adults alike.
Palais Boules (Bubble Dream Castle), Cannes, France - Situated in the small town of Theoule-sur-mer, near Cannes in the south of France, the Bubble Dream Castle is one of the most bizarre in Europe. Designed by architect Antti Lovag, it brings the wonders of the great outdoors into the home.
Construction of the Bubble Dream House began in 1975 and continues today. The vast structure is made of mesh, metal rods and concrete. All 28 rooms in the house are designed to look like bubbles. Home to French fashion designer Pierre Cardin, the castle is a notorious party hotspot for the rich and famous.
In spite of its relative youth, this weird and wonderful building has already been declared a historic monument by the French Ministry for Culture. The ever-changing nature of Lovag's Bubble Dream Castle makes this a site to visit again and again!
Spaceship House, Chattanooga, Tennessee - If you've ever driven along the 127 highway in Tennessee, you might have noticed a huge spaceship parked on the side of Signal Mountain in Chattanooga. Not, in fact an extra-terrestrial vehicle, the spaceship is a three-bedroom house, built and designed by American architect C.W. King in 1970.
Made of concrete and steel, the structure is raised off the ground and supported by four legs. The innovative design of the Spaceship House allows water and electricity to be supplied through the legs.
The current owner of the Spaceship House rents this amazing three-bedroom home out as long-stay family accommodation.
Strawberry House, Tokyo - Built in 1984, the Strawberry House is an intriguing shopping complex, theme park and children's centre. Situated in Denenchofu, a small suburb of Tokyo, the building is home to an impressive two-floor Sanrio store, stocking Hello Kitty merchandise.
The real magic of the Strawberry House is to be found on the third floor, in the famous Strawberry Room. This is the headquarters of the Strawberry Mates club, a children's social club which holds regular activity days.
Families travel from all over Japan to convene at the Strawberry House. A visit to this bizarre house and theme park is a fun day out and provides an intriguing insight into Japanese children's culture.
